Georgian Houses 1700-1780 – A Field Guide To American Houses

Sample of Georgian Style House

Hi everyone,

While I was obtaining my Certificate For  Historic Preservation and Sustainability at Cornell University, my instructor introduce me to A Field Guide to American Houses by Virginia Savage McAlester.  Its a treasure chest of drawings, pictures, and descriptions of styles, forms and structure of houses beginning with Native American to Modern structures.  It looks at the house features of  material used, roofs, windows, porches, and doors.  It includes locations with the houses’ variances and dates of its building prominence. I have attached one sketch of a Georgian house usually built from 1700-1780.  An example would be Ford Mansion at the Morristown National Historical Park, Morristown. I could go on and on, but best results would be to look at a copy of the book with its 1,600 illustrations and maps.  A copy is available at the Morris County Library or possibly at your local town library.
